WebMay 4, 2012 · A mildly built up 289 will run as well as a comparable mildly built up 302. There would be no point in investing in a 302 if you are going to go to a stroker in the next jump. If you plan to jump on it hard the stock transmission is probably not going to hold up. The u-joints may not either. If you do a lot of stoplight to stoplight driving its not very fun unless you put 3.89 or 4.11 gears behind it. The HiPo 289 in my Shelby had worked HiPo heads and a pretty radical cam.
