WebRobert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) became famous, not to say notorious, in the 1970s and 1980s for his photographs of male and female nudes and for his depictions of gay, sado-masochistic sex. His exploration of hitherto hidden areas of life was very much part of the sexual liberation movements of that time. WebMapplethorpe explained his attitude to the preparation of self-portraits in a manner that he wished to transform consciousness of the people. By showing himself in female’s makeup, in girlish manner with certain level of flatness of the body, the artists wanted people to free their mind from perceptions and social limitations. He grew up in a family of zealous Catholics who provided their six children with a calm and joyful childhood.
