Choosing an armchair beyond its shape

A good-looking chair only earns its place when it is comfortable for the person who uses it.

Start with the activity

Reading upright, watching a film and feeding a baby call for different kinds of support. Seat depth matters as much as overall width. When possible, try the chair with your feet on the floor and your back resting naturally, rather than perching on the front edge for a moment.

Measure the whole journey

Measure the intended corner, but also the hallway, stairs and entrance. Ask the retailer whether legs can be removed and whether delivery includes carrying the item into the room. Keep packaging requirements and collection charges in mind when reviewing the returns policy.

Read the fabric information

A colour name tells you little about care. Check the fibre composition, cleaning instructions and whether cushion covers are removable. Order a sample and view it in daylight and lamplight. A pale textured weave may be forgiving visually but need different care from a smooth washable cover.

Leave some breathing room

A chair needs space for elbows and, if it reclines, movement behind it. Place a small table where a cup is easy to reach without leaning. If the chair competes with a doorway, a smaller model is often a better choice than rearranging the room around an impractical piece.

A few things to take away

  • Try the seat, not just the silhouette.
  • Measure doors and stair turns.
  • Read delivery and return conditions.
